Life threatening disease, Mucormycosis, also known as black fungus has been recorded among many covid-19 patients in India adding a health burden to the country that has lost more than 100,000 of its citizens in the last one month alone to Corona virus.
Doctors are are saying black fungus is caused by high use of steroids to treat Covid-19 has caused the surge in the deadly disease.
India Authorities on Thursday announced that they are planning to set up special wards in the country’s capital to helf fight the malady.
According to Korean Times, the disease kills 50 percent of those it affectes within days and in some cases upper jaws and eyes have to be surgically removed to stop the spread of the disease.
The organic fungus are normally naturally found in the soil but when they find themselves in the human body, they can infect the teeth, eyes, cheeck bones, nose and air pockets behind the forehead.
The fungus enter the body through skin injuries or breathing.
Covid-19 drugs are believed to suppress the body immune system that would normally fight black fungus.
Black fungus is also more likely to affect corona virus patients with underlying health conditions such as diabetes.
India diabetes cases are known to be among the highest in the world. (AFP)
