The United States has lifted sanctions imposed against Burundi six years ago noting various reforms that the country has achieved.
This followed President Joe Biden invoking an executive order that legalized the sanctions more than half a decade ago.
US Secretary of State Antony Blinken said that the US recognizes the progress made by President Ndayishimiye on addressing trafficking in persons, economic reforms, and combating corruption and encourage continued progress.
The US Imposed sanctions on Burundi following chaos in the country that erupted when the late president Nkurunziza decided to vie for a third time for office despite the illegality of his bid.
The chaos led to deaths of over 1000 people while thousands others were displaced.
Nkurunziza died last year of Covid related complications.
