Former President of Somali Ali Mahdi Muhammad had died in Nairobi. Sources have it that Mahdi may have died from Covid 19.
Mahdi served as Somali President from January 1991 to January 1997. He was designated President again in 1997 by the ‘Cairo Agreement’. He was succeeded by Abdikasim Salad Hassan who was elected in Djibouti in 2000.
On twitter, his demised was confirmed by former Somali President Sharif Sheikh Ahmed.

Embassy of Somali-USA also released a statement of condolence to the Somali people, family and friends of the late president.

The former president Mahdi, was born in 1939 in Jowhar, southern Middle Shabelle region in an Abgaal Hawiye clan.
He began his career as a business man and an entrepreneur and joined politics in 1968 when he vied for a parliamentary seat in Mogadishu.
