Residents of Athwana ward in Tigania West have come out to protest the number of teenage pregnancies in the village allegedly being caused by endless prayer night vigils (Keshas) by one of the local churches.
The every-night vigils have also resulted to school dropouts, truancy and lack of concentration during classes as pupils dozed during lessons.
These problems ailing the village were penned down and sent to the authorities by other local pastors in connection with the schools around.
“The denomination is conducting ‘keshas’ from Monday to Sunday every week hence resulting in poor education standards because pupils have no time to do their homework, absenteeism and they sleep in class…” part of the letter read.
The group says they have in the past tried engaging the elders but the problem has persisted. Meanwhile, Assistant County Commissioner had in the recent past banned school going girls from going out for kasha.
The council of local pastor nevertheless still wants the government to investigate the issues and bring those defiling underage girls to justice.
