Sarah Obama, grandmother to former US President Barack Obama passed away Monday morning while receiving treatment at Jaramogi Teaching and Referral Hospital.
This was confirmed by Masat Obama who is the eldest daughter to the late.
Mama Sarah has reportedly been sick since 2019. She was the third wife of Husein Onyango Obama, the former US President’s paternal grandfather. She was also the oldest Matriarch in the Obama lineage.
President Kenyatta has condoled with the Obama family saying Mama Sarah was an icon of family values and greatly contributed to Kenya’s progress.
“The passing away of Mama Sarah is a big blow to Kenya as the country has lost a Virtuous woman. She was a matriarch who held the Obama family and was an icon of family values. She was a loving and celebrated philanthropist who graciously shared the little she had with the less fortunate in her community,” said President Kenyatta.
Siaya Governor Cornel Rasanga eulogized the Matriarch as caring and loving and compassionate in her role in helping the less fortunate in the community.
“The people of Siaya will miss Mama Sarah’s guidance on cultural matters,” the governor said.
On the other hand, Kisumu Governor Professor Anyang’ Nyong’o, remembered Mama Sarah as friend to his late mother, charming and warm to those who paid her visits.
“She was my late Mother’s friend and a dear grandmother to all of us. She was always charming and warm to those who visited her home. May the Load rest her soul in eternal Peace,” the Kisumu Governor Said.
Alego Usong Member of Parliament Sam Atandi described the late Sarah Obama as a wise woman who brought development progress in the community.
Mama Sarah Obama will be remembered as philanthropist who helped mobilized funds to pay school fees for many children, supported many widows and initiated many community development programs.
