Kenya targets to export its locally manufactured firearms

President Kenyatta on Thursday launched a Ksh 4billin firearm factory in Ruiru.

The firearm production facility will see Kenya Join world players in firearm manufacturing business.

The factory will be in a position of producing 12,000 assault rifles per year with 60 percent of its local input drawn from local resources.

During the launch of the facility, President Kenyatta noted that with the weapons factory in the country, the cost of acquiring weapons will be much lower and the facility will also provide jobs for thousands of youths in the country.

In line with the big 4 agenda, the president said Kenya is in the process of improving its self-reliance in the arena of security.

“This groundbreaking initiative will allow us to lay the foundation for addressing the high cost of weapons acquisition, free us from the complex foreign export approval processes currently in place,” President Kenyatta, said, as reported by The Star.

The President went on to say that the industry will boost Kenya’s “balance of trade position” and provide “Kenya with greater security sector independence and flexibility.”
