British lawyer, Karim Khan, who happens to be DP Ruto’s lawyer, has been elected chief prosecutor at the International Criminal Court.
Khan will hold the office of chief prosecutor at the ICC for the next nine years. At the moment, the lawyer is in charge of United Nations investigations into war crimes committed by Islamic State in Iraq.
Mr. Khan got the position during the Assembly of state parties to the Rome Statute of the ICC during its second nineteenth session on 12th February at the UN Headquarters in NY.
In the closely fought-contest, Mr. Khan was voted in by 72 countries out of the 123 counties that took part in the election for the second round of voting. He won more votes ahead of candidates from Spain, Italy and Ireland.

Mr. Khan will succeed Gambian judge Fatou Bensouda whom the United States imposed sanctions against when she attempted to investigate US actions in Afghanistan.
The newly elected- prosecutor defended Deputy President William Ruto at the ICC on charges of murder, deportation and persecution following the 2007 post-election Violence. Khan has also defended son of Former Libyan Leader Muammar Gaddafi, Saifd Al Islam.
