The Garisa senator Mr. Mohamed Yusuf Haji was pronounced dead on Monday morning (15th February) at the Aga Khan Hospital , Nairobi where he was undergoing treatment.
The 80 year old late senator had recently been returned to the country from Turkey where he was flown for treatment and admitted at Agha Khan Hospital on Saturday night.
The legislator is said to have slipped and dislocated his hip at his Garissa home after which he underwent an operation which took 5 hours.
The late Haji was the father to the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) Noordin Yusuf Haji and also the chairperson of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) task force.

Haji’s Political Journey
- The late senator acquired provincial administrative rank of District Officer (DO) in 1960 and rose to became the most popular provincial commissioners. He then retired from the provincial administrative in 1997.
- Haji worked as an Assistant Minister in the President’s office in 1998 to 2001 then later became the Minister of State for Cabinet Affairs in 2002.
- In 2002, he was elected as the Member of Parliament for Ijara Constituency with KANU ticket.
- In 2008 to 2013, he worked as a Cabinet Minister for Defence under the Grand Coalition Government of former President Mwai Kibaki and FORMER Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
- Until his death, Mr. Haji was on his second term service as the Garissa Senator.
He is among few of the leaders who have served during the retired President Mwai Kibaki’s tenor and the current President Uhuru Kenyatta.
He will be laid to rest today ( Monday 15th February) at Lang’ata Muslim Cemetary after his Janazah prayers which is set to be conducted at 4pm same day.
