First Aid: How to save a fainting person

Perhaps the most common first aid skill too common to everyone is saving a faint person. Fainting happens when the blood fails to reach the brain for a moment causing a person to lose consciousness. In many cases fainting may have little health significance but, in some cases, it may be as a result of serious health disorder related to the heart. It is therefor important to view lose of consciousness as a health emergency until causes are known.

Anytime you feel faint, lie down or sit down to rest to avoid fainting again. If you are sitting down, place your head between your knees.

If someone else near you faints; let the person lie on his back. If there are no injuries, and the person is breathing, raise the person’s leg above the heart. Do not get the person up fast to avoid the person fainting again.

It’s important to check for breathing by examining the pulse. If the person is not breathing, begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) and call or an emergence. Continue CPR until emergency arrive.

In case the person was injured in a fall associated with a faint, treat bumps, bruises or cuts appropriately. Control bleeding with direct pressure
