All teachers and school staff to get vaccinated

President Kenyatta yesterday directed that school teachers and staff to get covid-19 vaccination in a bid to enhance a safe learning environment for learners.

Initially teachers above the age of 50 were to take the Covid-19 jab but now teacher regardless of their age will be required to take the vaccine.

During the release of 2020 Kenya Certificate of Primary education certificate Exams, education cabinet secretary George Magoha made the announcement after meeting President Kenyatta at Statehouse.

Magoha also revealed that so far 26 primary school teachers have succumbed to the disease.

“All teachers and support staff in our schools be allowed to take Covid-19 vaccinations as part of the measures to ensure our schools are safe from the virus,” Said Magoha.

Nancy Macharia who is the Teachers Service Commission executive further added that TSC have lost eight head teachers, three deputy head teachers and fifteen teachers.

“Today, I’m happy to announce that the president has allowed teachers, irrespective of their age, to receive the jab. By 15th March, 92,256 teachers had been vaccinated,” Macharia said.

Macharia encouraged teachers who have not been vaccinated because of the tight schedule of invigilating KCPE to get the vaccination.

Magoha also retaliated his previous stance that the opening of school will continue despite the third wave of Covid-19 with both primary and secondary school students expected back to school by 10th of May.

Teachers also have the privilege of medical cover from any Covid-19 related illness.
